Simple solution for manually held mixheads: Bayer MaterialScience LLC’s BAYonet rapid mixhead mount system injects additional safety, convenience and efficiency

March 3, 2010

Pittsburgh, March 3, 2010 — Operators using a manual mixhead insertion process during reaction injection molding (RIM) can now benefit from the BAYonet system. This rapid mixhead mount concept was developed by Bayer MaterialScience LLC, one of the world's leading manufacturers of polyurethane raw materials and polyurethane systems.

The innovative, yet practical BAYonet system helps solve common challenges associated with RIM production systems, such as rotary table systems, in which the mixhead must be quickly attached – then detached after injection. These challenges include but are not limited to:
  • Accurately centering the mixhead into/onto the mold
  • Holding the mixhead firmly against the mold to avoid leakage, and
  • Safety concerns because the operator is in close proximity during injection.
The BAYonet system locks into position after the mixhead is accurately centered and placed by the operator. This enables the operator to move away from the injection point, translating into enhanced employee safety. The system is mobile for a multiple-mold environment when there's only one mixhead in use, for greater operational efficiency.

"Currently, there are not many options out there for a quick disconnect of a mixhead to a mold," said Michael F. Palmosina II, senior technical service specialist, RIM & Composites Group, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "The BAYonet system not only meets this current need, but at the same time injects an extra measure of safety into the process."

Palmosina and others on Bayer MaterialScience's Technical Services team often visit mold shops as part of the company's commitment to furthering polyurethanes industry innovation. Palmosina developed the BAYonet concept after observing the traditional RIM process and striving to find a safer and more efficient approach.

"It's a simple design that molders will be able to adapt to their existing equipment and processes," said Palmosina, noting that the BAYonet system is available from Bayer MaterialScience Technical Services. No license is required for use.
